For the first time, Samsungplaces a dual camera on one of its flagships. Even if this technology is not necessarily new, Samsung abandons its conservative aspect, it makes this double camera the most interesting element of this phone. Let’s look at the photo potential of this Note 8 in more detail.

Optical Zoom

Just like on the iPhone 7 Plus, the sensors of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 are different in terms of focal length. There is no 2x button in the application to allow the user to switch from one lens to another, but it is possible to pinch the screen to zoom, the camera automatically switches to one lens to the other.

In addition to this dual optical zoom, Note 8 also allows digital zoom but it results in a drop in quality. The maximum zoom is 10x. The pictures taken have a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and are interpolated in 12 megapixels. In other words, it is better to avoid doing more than a 4x zoom if you do not want to lose quality.

AndroidPIT

We will not dwell on a comparison with the OnePlus 5, on the one hand, because the Galaxy Note 8 and the iPhone 7 Plus are in a whole different price range, on the other hand, because we find that the configuration Of the OnePlus 5 camera is inconvenient. If you want to read more about the OnePlus 5 camera, we recommend that you read our comparison of the OnePlus 5 and the iPhone 7 Plus cameras.

High brightness even for telephoto lens

The opening system, more commonly referred to as the aperture, determines how much light arrives at the sensor. The smaller the number, the more light. This allows the choice of a shorter opening time or a lower sensitivity, which makes it possible to obtain respectively more stabilized photos and less noise.

The wide angle lens of the Galaxy Note 8 has an aperture f / 1.7. The telephoto lens has an aperture f / 2.4, so to put it simply it takes twice as much light to make a picture with this lens. Apple finds itself in a similar situation with its iPhone 7 Plus since it has an aperture f / 1.8 in wide angle and f / 2.8 for the telephoto lens.

While the difference, it is hardly felt, the difference between f / 2.4 and f / 2.8 is clearly clearer. While the iPhone 7 Plus takes a picture in 1/10 second, Note 8 does the same in 1/15 second, which reduces the risk of shaking in the picture.

Optical Image Stabilizer

The optical image stabilizer should have a much larger role. On the iPhone 7, only the wide angle is stabilized while on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, both sensors have an optical image stabilizer. This is very appreciable because when the opening is large it is easier to feel the tremors than with the wide angle.

When the aperture is high, we think the Note 8 will offer a much better performance than its competitors without optical stabilizer, or any model that gets information on the brightness from a second two-color sensor in the zooms.

During the presentation, we found it somewhat surprising that there was no autofocus dual pixel on the second camera. Maybe the light intensity of the telephoto lens is not enough. We have not yet received any information from Samsung on this subject, but we will, of course, keep you informed.

Bokeh or portrait mode

Like all smartphones with dual camera, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 features a Bokeh mode. The phablet takes the same shot with both lenses and uses the results to create the effect, making it possible to distinguish the subject in the foreground from the background, thus recalling what one can see on digital SLR cameras.

This is nothing new but Samsung differs somewhat from the competition. In addition, Note 8 also records the two original photos taken by the camera and not just the one with the effect.

Front camera

At the front, the camera makes pictures in 8 megapixels, offers a f / 1.7 aperture and has an autofocus. No small extra such as the dual camera or LED flash.

Summary

In my opinion, Note 8 seems to be the best photophone on the market. Without actually proposing an innovation, the Koreans follow Apple’s path: they take back the work of other manufacturers, improve it as much as possible and make it look like a real novelty.

Unless we encounter problems, we will say that Note 8 has the best photo module available. Apple, it’s up to you to do better.
