Ask any Apple fan and he will tell you that Android phones will never compete with the iPhone. While it may have been true before, this is no longer true since the launch of the Pixel XL, the brand new phone manufactured by the Google giant. We had our try using the Google  Pixel phone. Here is what we thought!

The design of the Pixel XL is a happy mix of Nexus, Samsung and Apple devices. It’s as if the Google engineers had taken the best elements of these to design their device.

On the right side are the traditional power and volume buttons. At the back, there is the fingerprint reader, much like the LG G5. Unlike the latter, the Pixel XL is very reactive. Simply press it and the screen unlocks instantly. And it works every time or almost everywhere. It’s like spying movies!

The screen

The Pixel XL features a 5.5-inch screen. For comparison, the Pixel, the entry-level model, comes with a 5-inch screen. This product is, therefore, part of the family of large cell phones. Despite the large size of his screen, we found that it slipped well into the pocket of our pants.

But the screen is not just beautiful: it is also very pretty. Embodying a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels, it allows making the most of its films and videos. The screen is bright but knows how to adapt when the environment is darker. In other words, when it’s dark, the screen does not make us blind.

One of the highlights of the Pixel XL is undoubtedly its two cameras, especially its rear camera. With a resolution of 12.3 megapixels (with an aperture of f / 2.0) and capable of shooting videos in 4K at 30 frames per second, it offers almost as much flexibility as a reflex camera.

No matter the ambient light, you can take great shots and good videos with this camera. In addition, it offers several interesting features, such as slow motion and pro lens, which allows you to really get out your creative side.

And do not be afraid to fill your camera with photos and videos. These are saved in Google Photo. According to Google, the storage space is unlimited and the recorded snapshots are available in their full resolution. Yes, there are other cloud services already, but we are glad that this feature is automatically available.

A phone that “smells” Google

The Pixel XL comes with the brand new Nougat 7.1 operating system. The regulars of Android will be in known terrain. On the other hand, the developers have integrated some interesting new features.

For example, the interface seemed to me more refined, especially by adding round icons. The application of texts was also reviewed. These are more than 1500 emoticons that have been added. Goodbye, the little fellows who are not even known if they smile or weep!

Speech recognition is another important part of this operating system. You can say “OK Google” to access it or press the microphone located at the top left on the home screen. In any case, voice recognition impresses. We were surprised how it recognized my voice. You can use it for a lot of things like doing research on the Internet, making a call or dictating and sending an email. Soon we will not need our fingers anymore!

Improved battery

The 3450 mAh battery of the Pixel XL may not allow you to go a week in jungle shipping without your charger. On the other hand, you can probably use it for a day or two without having to recharge it. All of this depends, of course, on how you use it.

What is interesting, especially for people in a hurry and those who forget to recharge their aircraft in the morning, is that in just 15 minutes of charges, one can have an autonomy of seven hours. And it really works!

A quick phone

Finally, with its Quad-Core CPU Snapdragon 821 of 2.15 / 1.6 GHz from Qualcomm and its 4 GB of RAM memory LPDDR4, the Pixel XL offers a navigation experience of the most user-friendly. You will be able to easily surf from one application to another and roll up gourmet applications. And with its 32 GB (or 128 GB), you will have enough space to store quite a few applications.

The Pixel XL is aimed at two categories of people:

1) Android enthusiasts looking for a good high-end phone and,

2) iPhone owners who would like to make the transition to Android.

In any case, they will be in good hands with the Pixel XL.

What we liked:

  • A clear interface
  • A breathtaking voice recognition
  • A good grip
  • It’s easy to navigate between applications

What we liked less:

A fairly high price
