HTC launches with a change of gear on the HTC U Ultra: new design and new materials, the highlight of artificial intelligence, second screen, new camera … the smartphone U Ultra stack the technical innovations to try to make a place on the top of the range.  With the U Ultra, the firm is trying to get back into the game of high-end Android, again practicing break.

Its design, first of all, is “innovative”, since the brand tells us that it gave birth to “Liquid Surface”. No hysteria in the room, it is simply a bent glass alloy and metal to unite the whole that is busy here. HTC does not push the world of smartphone lines but nevertheless, delivers a resolutely high-end device in its physical and aesthetic design.

All the latest equipment, but not waterproof

HTC U Ultra with 5.7-inch Super-LCD 5 WQHD smartphone, a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels on a diagonal of 14.5 cm, carries a mobile chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, the same one that occupies the entrails of almost all the high-end Android announced or released recently.

It is a 2.15 GHz Quad-Core platform with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable capacity via the addition of a microSD card. On the top of the device, a second screen takes place, over part of the width of the U Ultra, like what LG V10 and V20. At the bottom of the screen, a central button also hosts a fingerprint reader.

The followers of the IP68 will feel slightly forgotten here since HTC is deadlocked on a waterproof certification which nevertheless has the wind of stern on the top of the range. The most insightful will probably guess, with regard to the few snapshots of the article, that the U Ultra gets rid of the mini jack. Like the Lenovo Moto Z, the sound from the headphones passes through the wireless via Bluetooth or through the headphones provided via the USB-C port.

No mini-jack, the supplied intro kit connects in USB-C

On the connectivity side, Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth, and NFC are on the menu, as well as a GPS + GLONASS. Compatible with 4G LTE category 11 (maximum theoretical throughput up to 650 Mbps), it also offers the band 700 MHz (B28) and the triple aggregation of the bands.

The whole is animated by Android 7.0 Nougat and especially by a fresh version of the interface HTC Sense. A battery of 3000 mAh comes to give life to all this.

An Ultrapixel camera that you cannot wait to test

Always expected on the photo part, HTC is struggling on paper to keep up with the pace imposed by the competition. To do this, the brand incorporates one of the largest sensors in the industry, with photosites of 1.55 micron and a resolution of 12 Mpx.

HTC names it as usual Ultrapixel. A reference, since the One M7, to the capacity of the sensor, by its size, to catch more light than normal market. A sensor with a lens opens at f / 1.8 to put all the chances of light on its side and a module that adopts optical stabilization, phase detection, and laser focus.

At the front, the module incorporates a 16 Mpx sensor. In short, a photophone damn well equipped from all sides.

The few shots we were able to take with the U Ultra did not leave us an unforgettable memory, but the state of progress of the OS presented during our discovery of the smartphone does not allow to establish a beginning of judgment On the AFN, except that it shows itself in the very reactive state, with a record time of the trinity capture / processing / consultation of a shot.

Screen AI and AI

Beyond the picture, HTC also sets big on the Artificial Intelligence combo + second screen. An AI named Sense Companion. Like many mobile brands now – and based on what Qualcomm offers natively on its Snapdragon on learning the system according to usage – the U Ultra will scrutinize absolutely all the actions of its user for the In a dynamic takeover of Google’s Now, or simply now the latter’s assistant, inducted on Pixel.

Recommendations, access to favorite contacts, tidbits, info, weather, message / e-mail / social notifications instead of cluttering the screen, despite its already generous size that can accommodate multiple entries, HTC uses This second color display of ultra-reduced size to display this daily content according to the arrivals of info, but also contexts, notably on the battery.

The use of the latter is perpetually analyzed and the companion assisted screen can then notify an ideal recharge time in light of future activities. No room for the unexpected? Also, note that the Ultra U has voice assistance constantly listening.

New intras and 3D sound

At the audio shelf, often cared for by HTC on the high-end, and up to the headphones provided, the manufacturer seems to once again want to apply. Thus on the terminal, there are 2 stereo speakers and especially 4 microphones to improve the sound capture on videos or audio recordings taken with the U Ultra and that HTC cheerfully praises for the capture/playback “sound 3D”.

To this, HTC renews its search for a pair of superior-than-average in-ear headphones, after a first attempt very perfectible on the “10”, with a Usonic pair that the brand really wants to own each user in its rendering. Thus the intras would scan in 3 dimensions the channel of the carrier or the carrier to bring the best possible restitution. To have…

HTC will inevitably add a more than a salty addition to this U Ultra, with an indicative price. Together with the Ultra, HTC also officialized a smartphone U-Play, less big, a little less equipped, without second screen and exit.
