Windows 10 Update: Update your PC

Users who want to upgrade to Windows 10 can do so through the Microsoft site. According to the editor, Windows 10 has the ability to run all applications designed for Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The OS is also designed to run all drivers compatible with these older versions. Once installed, Windows 10 is regularly updated to optimize security and performance. Twice a year, the OS also benefits from an upgrade bringing new features.

What’s new in Windows 10

  • A Start Menu, and a real desktop for PCs: Windows 10 reverts to a “real” menu/start button similar to that of Windows 7. The modern interface, dedicated to tablets, disappears on non-tactile terminals, equipped with mice and keyboard.

  • The Continuum mode: Windows 10 allows to switch dynamically from the desktop mode to the tactile mode depending on the configuration: tablet or laptop (netbook, ultra book …). A function that is designed for hybrid terminals.
  • The ability to create multiple virtual desktops: Windows 10 introduces a virtual desktop feature. It allows the user to have several offices according to his professional or personal needs, and to pass to one another.

  • The Cortana Voice Assistant: the Cortana Voice Assistant enters Windows. It allows to launch, by voice or in full text, searches local or on the Web, but also to manage its agenda, its calendar…
  • New applications: Windows 10 integrates a new browser Edge, which is more modern than Internet Explorer.

  • Universal apps:Windows 10 introduces portable Universal Apps in all its variations (Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox …). They are offered via a now unified Windows store targeting both mobile and desktop.
  • New security features:Windows 10 integrates new security features: multi-factor authentication, data protection, and biometric authentication – including facial.

Windows 10 Pro vs. Home

  • Windows 10 Home is designed for PCs, tablets and hybrid terminals (2 in 1) sold to the general public.
  • Windows 10 Pro is equipped with functions (fleet management, data protection, cloud integration …).
  • Windows 10 Enterprise includes more advanced security and fleet management features than Windows 10 Pro.

  • Windows 10 Education is designed for the education sector (schools, universities …).
  • Windows 10 S : a new edition for PCs (it is expected to launch in July 2017)
  • Windows 10 IoT: edited edition for connected objects, “Wearable” and industrial machine tools.

Windows 7 Mobile

Windows 10 Mobile is free. Designed for smartphones and phablets (and more generally for terminals less than 9 inches), Windows 10 Mobile offers a look quite similar to its predecessor, with a home screen showing the apps in the form of tiles. Windows 10 Mobile is part of a two-year update process that follows Windows 10 for desktop and tablet.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Called the Fall Creators Update, the next major upgrade of Windows 10 is expected to be launched next September. Among its main evolutions:

  • A new design (called Microsoft Fluent Design System). More intuitive and homogeneous between the different devices Windows (PC, tablet, smartphone …), it will result in a more animated graphic interface, enhanced by depth effects and transparent application windows.
  • The ability to pin contacts on the taskbar. The new shortcuts (called MyPeople) will allow you to launch a Skype conversation faster or to share files.

  • Story Remix. Introduced in the photo management application (Photos), the Story Remix device must be able to automatically make pre-assemblies of videos or slideshows based on the grateful of images.
  • A “Cloud Clipboard”. A clipboard in cloud mode will appear to make it easier to copy and paste between terminals (Windows 10, iOS / Android).
  • OneDrive Files on Demand. Windows 10 will be able to open a file present in the Cloud environment of storage of files OneDrive without having to download it on the machine.

Initially announced, the addition of a session management timeline was finally postponed. Based on the Microsoft Graph, it was able to return to a previous state of Windows 10 (with the possibility to find applications, web sites, and open files …), but also to synchronize the sessions between different terminals (Windows, but also IOS and Android).

And the future of Windows 10?

For the next, Microsoft is planning on a version of Windows 10 optimized for ARM processors, but capable of running old applications (designed for x86 chips). The first Windows terminals based on this architecture should be commercialized by the end of the year. These products will introduce in parallel 4G mobile connection capacity, with the possibility to purchase transit on the Windows Store.

Microsoft would also consider upgrading Windows to a more modular infrastructure (based on software containers). An architecture that would help to reinforce the level of security of the OS and that could eventually allow users to personalize it (by choosing their functional components, somewhat like a custom-built PC).

Finally, a new edition of Windows 10 would be in boxes: Windows Pro 10 for Advanced PC. It would be designed to equip powerful PCs (equipped with up to four processors, instead of both for now, and equipped with 6 TB of RAM). This version should incorporate a brand new file system, called ReFS (for Resilient File System), instead of NTFS.
