The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 replaces the S2 9.7, at the top of the Android range of Samsung. On the menu: intelligent stylus, removable keyboard, upgrade of components, an evolution of the connections and audio system with 4 loudspeakers.

The Galaxy Tab S3 replaces the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 released mid-2015. This new tablet with a screen of 9.7 inches runs Android 7.0. Samsung positions it simultaneously on two niches: professional productivity and leisure.

The return of the intelligent pen in the high-end

The main innovation is an intelligent pen S-Pen with a fine tip (0.7 mm). Samsung had somewhat neglected this accessory yet very useful, whose high-end was private since the Galaxy Note 10.1 edition 2014.

In addition, the latest mid-range tablet with an S-Pen. And, for the record, this stylus is said to be “smart” because it has two active buttons and its flyover is detected. These functions are used by the system and some applications.

An optional keypad with magnetic connector

The newcomer also benefits from a removable keyboard with chic keys and magnetic fix, in all points comparable with that of the Galaxy tab S Pro under Windows 10. Due to the battery, it is powered by the tablet via a proprietary magnetic connector.

However, this keyboard is sold separately. And if we want to be rigorous, Samsung already offered a keyboard (Bluetooth) optional for the Galaxy Tab S2. That of Tab S3 is, however, better integrated and more emphasized.

The 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display, 2048 x 1536 pixels is retained

No major evolution at the level of the screen that remains, as on the Galaxy Tab S2, a 4/3 Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, for a diagonal of 9.7 inches. It must be said that this screen was already close to perfection. A little novelty, though: HDR compatibility (High Dynamic Range).

The other technical specifications progress, without revolution. The processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 integrating 4 cores clocked at 1.6 GHz but capable of rising to 2.15 GHz if needed. It accesses a RAM of 4 GB, against 3 GB for the Tab S2. This cocktail should guarantee an even better reactivity and 3D performances.

A storage space taped to 32 GB (or 64 GB?)

The Galaxy Tab S3 is only available in 32GB version. Samsung does not even evoke a 64GB version but we dare not imagine that it does not exist … For a high tablet of range, we would have liked an incursion towards the 128 GB.

One can always extend this space with the microSD slot that can accommodate cards up to 128 GB. But the access times to this additional memory will be less good.

The 5 and 13 Mpixels video sensors and a USB-C port

For their part, the video sensors benefit from a significant increase in resolution: 13 Mpixels for the rear camera and 5 Mpixels for the front webcam (compared with 8 and 2.1 Mpixels for the S2).

The connectivity changes slightly, the microUSB port logically giving way to a USB-C port (thus reversible). To this, we must add the proprietary port, dedicated to the connection of the keyboard.

Four speakers automatically configured according to the orientation

The Galaxy Tab S2 suffered from a defect: it had only two loudspeakers, which is more misplaced because located on a small side. This prohibited any stereo effect when viewing a movie in landscape mode.

The Galaxy Tab S2 corrects the shot by integrating four speakers that reconfigure automatically according to the orientation of the tablet, in order to always offer a correct stereo effect.

Dimensions slightly upward

It is doubtful these speakers, as well as the metallic back, justify a slightly increased weight, ie 429 g, against 389 g for the Galaxy Tab S2. The thickness also increases, ie 6 mm, against 5.6 mm. It is true that the battery offers a slightly higher capacity (6000 mAh), that is a range of 12 hours in video playback, according to Samsung.

The Galaxy Tab S3 is available in silver and black versions. Only one size is available – 9.7 inches – while the Tab S2 also had an 8-inch version.

What, we love:

  • The Super Amoled screen 2048* 1536 pixels (a safe value).
  • The Intel S-Pen.
  • The keyboard connected via a magnetic connector.
  • The 4 loudspeakers that are configured according to the orientation (portrait or landscape).
  • Resolution of video sensors.
  • The Snapdragon 820 + 4 GB of RAM.
