The Sony Xperia X Compact continues the tradition of Sony Mobile, with an HD touchscreen of 4.6 inches, a resolution of 1280 x 720 px on a diagonal of 11.7 cm, encased in a plastic shell.



Sony Xperia Compact borrows X platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 clocked at 1.8 GHz (2 cores ARM Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 ARM. the high-end Sony runs on the octal-core Snapdragon 820 and is called a choice, Xperia X Performance or the recently Xperia XZ presented, along with the X Compact.

At the mobile chip via Qualcomm add RAM 3GB storage capacity of 32 GB expandable via the addition of a microSD card, a USB-port C (new for Sony), a photo-sensor home video Exmor RS of 23 MP found on the Xperia Z5 since the end of 2015, a 5 MP sensor at the front and a fingerprint reader.


This Compact will still draw in an element of XZ to swagger, namely the combination of a laser autofocus, a digital magazine and a stabilization RGB sensor to support the photo part.

Everything is powered by a battery of 2700 mAh and Android OS powered by a 6.0-covered Marshmallow Sony interface. Xperia X Compact, without being small arms on paper, is not entirely a mini-clone of XZ. At that price, the Compact X stands, in theory, the alternatively small format of choice, both in the Android universe facing an SE iPhone. 


The Compact X has always displayed the lines very close to those of the classical model of which they were the mini-declination. Sony changed its mind in 2016. No alkaloid, but a shiny plastic that gives the smartphone a considerable lightness and, above all, a small vintage Formica side. This style will not unanimously slice it – and in a good way, if we had to be subjective here.


Like its antecedent, the X Compact features a fingerprint reader inlaid around it’s on / off button on the right spine. Designed for falling under the thumb of a right hand, it will adapt with some gripping adaptation to the index of the left hand. The operation is swift and errors are very rare, as on other Xperia equipped with this feature.


In a mobile world where standards rather play on the side of 5 inches HD presence, again and again, an HD display of 4.6 inches on the Xperia X Compact offers a notable display of finesse gain compared to slightly larger aircraft. Thus the Compact display has a density of 319 dots per inch which, without reaching the finesse of a Full HD display of 5.2 inches (424 dpi), offers a reading experience; already appreciable.


The display has never been the culmination of Sony smartphones, despite the excellence of the brand on TV.  It’s here with an average contrast of 1166: 1, which is not to throw, but the average LCD good products tends to move above 1400: 1 now. But at least the maximum remains high brightness (525 cd / m²) and the reflection rate of the slab remains measured (11%).



For the color rendering and color temperature, Sony made some welcome rebalancing in relation to the Xperia X Compact. Skin tones and primary colors are not totally faithful, when the temperature is a bit too high (7790 Kelvin), it turns light colors to blue.



Mobile and are very similar to Sony and interpretation of Android. If the Japanese integrate Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it also adds its usual home interface that dressed little basic icons of the Google OS, applications and adds those mess partners – fortunately mostly deactivated. We remain in the same software proposal. Note that all the basic Google apps are present at boot (Gmail, Maps, Hangouts, Drive, YouTube, Play Store …).


No progress to report on video playback part. The Sony reader still offers an interface combining local and online videos of the user direct access to its moving images on all sides. For the rest, MKV 1080p encoding with strength runs like clockwork.  We find two speakers in front of the X Compact. If their power is significant, their lack of precision is a bit less. Care must be taken not to push them thoroughly to maintain an acceptable distortion.

Gaming experience


Like the Xperia X, the X Compact today embodies an excellent mobile machine for the game, it is “casual” or gourmet 3D titles. If the Snapdragon platform is not the beefier of the sector, the combination of its Adreno 510 graphics chip and a RAM of 3GB generates a smooth gaming experience and very valuable quality graphics in 3D.


Sony continues to operate its main sensor of 23 megapixels.  With the compact X, it is accompanied by additional reinforcements, namely a laser autofocus – RGB sensor for better management of color and contrast and 5-axis stabilization, but digital. Nippon still does not go to the optical stabilization.


Sony opens its photo application with automatic rendering 8MP. You will have a better picture on this mode only in passing in pure 23-Megapixel where the image is expressed with too much brutality and contours often drawn to the deck. Only the manual mode with great skill settings and patience in shooting enable well take advantage of the 23-megapixel full pot.

For photo rendering, we generally found that that was the essence of Xperia X and X performance, remaining the same sensor and Sony’s treatment of work do not seem to change that much. The colors stand out a little more and there is a report improved slightly in dark areas of pictures in ideal or mild conditions. Good for portraits and macros, the laser focus is definitely one of the best uses of this technology in the mobile market.

Digital stabilization

The new vintage digital stabilization therefore primarily benefits the video. No 4K on this Compact – but is it a real lack? – But a Full HD capture very good composition.


Phone side

The contact management is classic, with a number, email address and mailing – can launch Maps Navigation with a click. It benefits from the overall aesthetic evolution of this new version of the Sony interface for Android. The grip system locks onto the best players of the moment, with this 4G solidly most of the time and a robust Wi-Fi. For navigation, as Xperia X, it will take on a rather precise GPS (less than 4 m apart in accuracy) and with a rapid first fix from the satellites always done in less than 5 seconds.
