Do not call “mini” but “compact”.  The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact are “condensed” versions of their respective big brother. Indeed, the two smartphones benefit from a highly attractive specs worthy of a typical device “high end”. Terminals that will be appreciated by small hands at a time when the mobile phone market is flooded with PHABLET.

The Xperia Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact:

The test gives us a clear vibe to which of the two Japanese smartphones you really fall for:

  • The best price of Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: 749 AED
  • The best price of Sony Xperia Z3 Compact: 849 AED

Aesthetic: Omnibalance design

Both devices remain faithful to omnibalance expensive Sony design.  The Z1 Compact is available in black, white, pink and lime. The Z3 Compact is available in black, mint green, red and white. If the Xperia Z1 Compact boasts a circumference of aluminum, one of the Z3 Compact is translucent plastic that will withstand very little blows of nails. While the rest frame of aluminum, this is for me the weak point of the Z3 Compact.

Front face:

  • For the Z1 Compact, a 4.3-inch screen above which include a headset, the light sensor / proximity, LED notifications, the Sony marking in chrome letters and the front camera.

Below the screen there since 3 keys “back, home and multitasking” are integrated into the display.

  • The Z3 Compact, a 4.6-inch screen topped with a headphone / speaker, brightness sensor / proximity, LED notifications, Sony marking, and a front camera.

Below the screen, the second speaker.

  • Note that if the white version of the Z1 Compact the front is black, the white variation of the Z3 Compact the front is white.

Back / rear:

The rear face of Z1 Compact appears to be made of polycarbonate, while that of Z3 Compact is verve. There is a photo sensor surrounded by a chrome ring accompanied by LED flash, the NFC logo and Sony markings Xperia in both the phones.

On the Z1 C, there is more micro secondary entrance hidden by a small grid.

  • Top side:

For the Z1 C, a jack port 3.5 circled chromium.

For the Z3 C, a 3.5 jack harbor surrounded by a chrome ring and a secondary microphone input.

  • Bottom side:

On the Z1 C, a hole to accommodate a hand strap and grid speaker (also masking the primary microphone input).

On the Z3 C, two holes for receiving a strap and a micro-primary input.

  • Left side:

Of the two terminals, 3 caps for protecting the micro USB port, micro SD slot and SIM slot (on the micro Z1 C, nano on Z3 C).

  • Right side:

On the two smartphones, the power button, the volume +/- button and trigger the picture.

Both devices are of reasonable size, the handling is very good.  The Z1 C has measurements of 127 x 64.9 x 9.5 mm and weighs 137 grams, while his cousin adopts dimensions of 127.3 x 64.9 x 8.64 mm and weighs 129 grams. Both the design of the Xperia Z1 Compact than the Z3 Compact is successful.  As per the design omnibalance Sony is a safe bet.

Image and sound: high art

The screen size of the Z1 and Z3 was necessarily reduced and this results in a Full HD switching to HD Ready.

  • Screen:

The Z1 Compact has a 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 720 × 1280 pixels, which gives us a 342ppp density (Pixels Per Inch or PPI: Pixels Per Inch) .The display of Z3 passes compact 4.6 inches and adopts a resolution identical to that of his cousin. This results in a reduction in pixel density which therefore passes 319ppp.  Both screens use Triluminos technology and X-Reality Engine.  In both cases, the pictures are very beautiful, vibrant colors and very good contrasts.

  • Touch screen:

In both cases, the touch screen is very responsive.

  • Speaker, earpiece jack 3.5:

If the speaker Z1 C broadcasts a mono sound, those (they are 2) of Z3 C delivers stereo sound.  In both cases, the sound is very clear and on. The calling earpiece of the two devices providing crystal clear sound.  In this regard, note the presence of the “Clear Phase” that automatically manage the audio quality without generating distortion.  These include the presence of excellent in-ear headphones in the box both terminals.

Two mobile devices with very good sound, displaying a beautiful image and on which we will enjoy watching videos.

Performance: in the top of the basket

Both smartphones exhibit top performance, which is very rare for mobile “compact” type.

Performance worthy mobile “high end” and that allow these two devices to run applications and the most demanding 3D games. The whole being bound to components such as a processor (CPU), a graphics processing unit (GPU) and a random access memory (RAM).

  • The Xperia Z1 Compact: a quad-core processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 clocked at 2.2GHz, Adreno 330 graphics processor and 2GB of RAM.
  • For the Z3 Compact: a quad-core processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974 clocked at 2.5GHz Pro, an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

Connectivity: over-all

Sony is a manufacturer that never disappoints in terms of connectivity.  A manufacturer concerned not only the level and quality of grip networks but also of the standards. Thus, the Z1 and Z3 Compact are mobile quad band GSM, 3G + and compatible with 4G LTE networks.

Operating system: Android to Sony

Naturally, Sony is a manufacturer that equips all its mobile OS from Google.  The manufacturer knows and mastered this system without going very far in the graphic overlay.

  • Add up the Android KitKat in its latest version 4.4.4.
  • This graphical overlay is functional and far from the same level as the abundance of special effects and other shortcuts to some South Korean manufacturers.

 Usage: pro and personal

By their connectivity and performance, both smartphones are really versatile.  One can very well imagine as well in the hand of an individual (for personal needs) than that of a professional (for its business communications). The Sony Xperia Z1 and Z3 Compact are mobile which can be both fun (watching movies or videos, listen to MP3, games, etc. …) and productive (calendar, email, GPS, etc. …).

Excellent Camera:

The two Japanese phones are equipped with a 20.7 megapixel camera complete with LED flash.

The shots are very good. The video mode is compatible with the 1080p maximum manual mode.

The Z3 C 4K feature is available in the different modes of the menu. These modes offer a selection of options such as augmented reality.  Both mobiles are also equipped with a 2MP front camera.

Battery life:

The Xperia Z1 Compact has a 2300mAh battery, while the Z3 Compact is 2600 mAh. Xperia Z3 Compact takes almost two days before needing to be recharged.  Both terminals offer the best endurance of the market and the Stamina mode will push their autonomy even further.

Conclusion: Compact but powerful

It will be very difficult to separate these two Sony smartphones as they graze both excellence.

  • The Z1 Compact boasts an aluminum rim which gives it a premium side. The pixel density and the brightness of the screen are higher than those of the Compact Z3.

By cons, it does not film in 4K, the screen size is “only” 4.3 inches and it does not benefit from the “Remote Play” application.

  • The Z3 Compact has a 4.6-inch screen. It is capable of shooting 4K and features of the application “Remote Play”. For cons, the plastic rim “shocks” and especially, it does not resist the blows of nails. Its screen brightness is lower than the Z1 Compact and its screen has a pixel density lower than the Z3 Compact.

We hope this info has enlightened you a bit more about these two excellent Japanese smartphones.
