Sony Mobile launched its high-end smartphone of the year, the Xperia X Performance. Three months later, the temperature drops, autumn comes … and Sony launches its high-end smartphone of the year, the Xperia XZ. In less than a year, the Japanese firm has released no fewer than 3 smartphones on the same segment: the Xperia Z5, the Xperia X Performance and so this Pieria XZ.

The XZ is the highest-end Sony smartphone to date, with a Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, 3GB RAM, expandable 32GB storage capacity by adding a microSD card, and The main camera with a 23-megapixel sensor, all covered with an IPS Triluminos Full HD 5.2-inch LCD touchscreen (1920 x 1080 pixels on a diagonal of 13.2 cm). So far dependent on a micro-USB port for energy recharge and data transfer, the Xperia series switches to USB-C. A change previewed on the Xperia X Compact launched almost at the same time as this XZ. The two terminals share another feature, namely the main video camera with a 23-megapixel sensor, as well as an RGB sensor, a new generation digital stabilization and a laser focus.

Finally, the Xperia XZ is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow covered with a Sony overlay and is powered by a battery with a capacity of 2900 mAh. Compatible with 4G LTE Category 9 (maximum theoretical throughput of 450 Mbps), the XZ also adopts the 700 MHz frequency band (B28) and is equipped with Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC for wireless connectivity. A dual-SIM model is also part of the game, but it will be necessary to choose between extending the memory via microSD.

Despite the fact that Xperia XZ has been designed exclusively for at least 3 generations, the Xperia XZ has evolved into Sony’s mobile phone lines. In this sense, it shares many things with the Xperia X Compact, which looks much less like a Xperia X than the new very high-end Nippon, creating a floating form in the manufacturer’s consistent range. Effect especially visible – and beautiful way – on the blue model. The periphery of the mobile, integrally made of plastic to join the glass front – with the slightly curved ledge that one finds anywhere from now – and the backside in aluminum.

The main button on the slice above the volume always incorporates a fingerprint reader. The latter is simply one of the fastest ever offered on a smartphone – still above the Xperia Performance – and has an anecdotal failure rate.

Sony still achieves a notable advance on its screen, with a new anti-reflective coating that allows it to offer a light reflection rate of only 9 percent. A nice ratio that is noticeable in use, equivalent to that of the iPhone 7 and among the best in the sector. The contrast is close to that of the X Performance (1250: 1 here and 1330: 1 on the Performance) and still exceeds that of the Xperia Z5 (1030: 1), while the maximum brightness peaks at 500 cd / m². The whole gives a very good legibility, inside as well as outside.

For the comfort of reading, Sony keeping its Full HD on 5.2 inches for quite some time now, we will say again that the 424 dots per inch of display density proposed by this XZ are quite sufficient for any Type of content, except for the virtual reality which requires a definition always high.
Note that Sony offers three display modes (X-Reality, Very Vivid and a neutral mode with no artifact enabled). The only domain of expression of these two first modes is found in the only one of the Album (Sony application of Photo Gallery). Throughout the rest of the XZ, each mode cannot express itself. Beyond the relatively limited interest of the thing, it turns out that the visual behavior of the smartphone is identical from one mode to another in normal use, as already spotted to varying degrees on the Xperia X Performance and X Compact.

Interface and navigation
The lightweight layer of Google’s basic Android offer, the Sony interface has gradually gained clarity, but remains overwhelmed with irrelevant applications and sometimes duplicate at startup. We note a few occasions of competition, such as searching for content or apps within the phone and the web via a search field that appears sliding finger down from the middle of the screen – Apple iOS Spotlight cuckoo. A practical function, whatever it may be.

This Xperia XZ can show some mini-failures in the fluidity of the OS. Some transitions jolt, a scrolling of Android home pages slows down a microsecond … minimal incidents, but not very acceptable on this level of range and probably correctable via update for better optimization.
As with all the latest Xperia, the XZ can play videos up to Full HD 1080p without ever failing and its dedicated application of reading always has a good idea to regroup all the video content of the user, come from any source or location, at the same location. The Xperia XZ’s headphone output delivers the right power combined with minimal distortion and wide dynamic range.

With a Snapdragon 820 and its graphics chip Adreno 530 under the hood, the Xperia XZ leaves with a platform of choice for mobile gaming pleasures. Like the X Performance, which is also equipped, the whole game section of the Play Store of Google gives itself to heart joy on the screen Full HD of this Sony. Some 3D titles, like Riptide GP2, which offers graphic quality rises that can make most Android mobile phones are cashed by the XZ without flinching. We did, however, notice some micro-slowdowns in the 3D games after 15 to 20 minutes.

The Exmor RS 23MP Digital Stabilization Sensor (new generation here, 5 axes, derived from the Sony camcorder family) a laser focus and an RGB sensor to directly correct the color rendering and especially manage the white balance more dynamically.

In the video, the XZ takes full advantage of this famous digital stabilization. Still very strong in the field, despite a stopping point that can be marked according to generations compared to smartphones with optical stabilization, Nippon offers here a very clean, fast focus and remarkable stability. Important note for users who absolutely want the 4K / UHD capturing on their mobile, the Xperia XZ is provided, but still in its own mode, outside the video mode.

Battery life

With a battery capacity of 2900 mAh, the XZ somewhat inflates its endurance potential against the Xperia X Performance (2700 mAh). For full power, if Sony boasts of fast charging, it remains limited to the Quick Charge 2.0 standard, when its Snapdragon platform gives it access, in absolute, to the Quick Charge 3.0. No 100% recharge in 80 minutes, but rather a little less than 2 hours.
The Xperia XZ phone side

The classic mobile behavior of the Xperia XZ is strictly the same as the Xperia X Performance. We, therefore, resume our initial observations, which have not evolved by one iota. On the communications side, the Xperia XZ, like the Xperia X Performance, is an admirable companion for calling, with conversations without noise or noise and a very suitable sound volume for the communication loudspeaker. The network hangs on the best devices of the moment, with a 4G present solidly most of the time and a robust Wi-Fi.
