Xiaomi made us wait a long time before presenting us this new high-end. After nearly two years, it returns with the successor of the Mi 4: the Mi 5. Is it worth buying the Mi 5?

Design and finishing

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is very smooth. However, there is, unfortunately, no protection against shocks, water or dust. Big advantage: the screen has almost no borders on the sides, which makes its use very pleasant.

For the first time also, a physical oval button appears on the front of the phone. It hides the fingerprint reader of the smartphone, a feature that all brands are now using on their devices.

This Home button is physical but can also be used as a capacitive button. In other words, you do not have to press it to return to the Home screen. You can choose the material you want in the back: either you decide for a glass back, or you prefer the back ceramic. The latter is available in the 128GB variant, and it is hard as iron. If you opt for glass, you can choose between white, yellow gold and black.

As mentioned above, the surface of the screen is very wide, particularly on the sides. It should also be pointed out that the lens of the camera does not go beyond, unlike some competing models. The front panel also features the 4-megapixel front camera (already seen on the Mi Note), the loudspeaker for calls and the famous MI logo of the brand.

Here we have a large 5.15-inch LCD screen. Thanks to its new LED backlight, the maximum brightness has been increased to 600 cd / m². With the adaptive contrast, the brightness of each pixel could be increased.

The screen of the Xiaomi Mi 5 completely convinced me. Its Full-HD definition is sufficient for everyday use and the brightness does not present any weaknesses. The colors are well represented, and it is nice to watch photos and videos on it.

Other features:

Fingerprint reader

The Xiaomi Mi 5 offers a fingerprint reader. For the first time, the Chinese brand decided to implant it on the front button of the smartphone.

Xiaomi decided to push more NFC technology on its phones and partnerships for its use. The Mi 5 is therefore compatible. As a reminder, it is possible with this feature to exchange data between two smartphones and make payments using short-range wireless connectivity.

Software Interface

The items you find below refer to the Chinese ROM to which had been added the applications of Google which, moreover, do not work correctly.

We quickly see the failures of Chinese ROMs with applications running in the background as they constantly try to maintain a connection with the server. We can mention for example instant messaging applications, such as WhatsApp or Threema.

As soon as a Multi ROM is available, you can install it on your Mi 5. This is not a new situation at Xiaomi, we had already seen this with the Xiaomi Redmi 3, it was possible to install a ROM.

Xiaomi uses on its Mi 5 the MIUI 7 interface, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. MIUI is one of the most dynamic user interfaces on smartphones, and there are software updates every week. It is inspired much by iOS as does its Chinese competitor Huawei / Honor with EMUI. Five default themes are preinstalled, as are a number of applications.

On this Mi5, Xiaomi has not changed much its interface, visually speaking, but various improvements are present. Android Marshmallow is, of course, available directly by default, so no need to wait for an update. This is rather good news because Xiaomi is slow enough to switch from one Android version to another.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is very fast and adapts perfectly to gaming. Inside the Xiaomi Mi 5, we find a Snapdragon 820 processor. The internal memory has also been improved. Xiaomi took to Samsung Galaxy S6’s UFS 2.0. This flash memory technology can reach up to 450 MB per second so that each application can be loaded in a fraction of a second.

This smartphone offers a 16-megapixel camera, like its Korean competitor. Unfortunately, it is not as good as one could imagine.

A rumor announced an f / 1.6 opening for the camera, unfortunately, it is not f / 2.0. The optical stabilizer works on four axes: two are dedicated to the rotation, the other two to the transverse axes.

In practice, the stabilizer is very good and allows to make videos quality. The Mi 5 is one of the best smartphones for video. The sensor comes from Sony, it is the newest IMX298.

The pixel-to-pixel DTI technology is supposed to allow a border between areas of different colors and should make the video recordings more realistic. Qualcomm’s signal processor delivers fast real-time retouching.

Battery life

Despite the case somewhat compact, Xiaomi introduced in this smartphone a big battery. Its maximum capacity is 3,000 mAh. This was achieved with a density of 685 Wh / L. The battery of the Xiaomi Mi 5 holds a day.

It is possible to recharge the device very quickly, in one hour the battery can be charged to hold all day. Recharging is done with a Type-C cable.

Final Verdict

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is a good phone. The optical stabilizer makes the camera a good video camera, which is a good argument in its favor. If Xiaomi wanted to sell its devices in Europe and proposed a much more complete 4G compatibility, they would really represent a good deal. Xiaomi shows with this Mi 5 that we can find high-end equipment at a mid-range price.
